Adult Bible Class
We are following up last year’s study of the Gospels by spending this year covering the rest of the New Testament, starting with Acts. Our theme is, “What do we do now?,” which recognizes that the disciples no longer have Jesus to teach them and answer their questions on a daily basis, leaving them to address the problems of life on their own (with help from the Holy Spirit) – much like what we ourselves have to do in our own day. After we’re done with Acts, we will cover Paul’s letters and the general epistles, before breaking from format (but only slightly!) to “study Bible study” – that is, see how the church has studied the Bible over the years, as reflected in Calvin’s teaching, and in our Book of Confessions, which covers from ancient to modern times.
All are welcome! Feel free to drop by any week and join our discussions. For more information about the class, contact Walter Heindl.
The Forum
Forum classes will not meet during the summer months (Last class for spring is May 16, 2010)
Come join us for our weekly Adult Forum discussions, using materials from the “Thoughtful Christian” series. Each week we engage in friendly discussions on topics involving Bible study and interpretation, issues of spirituality, or Christian perspectives on social issues. It is not a Bible Study per se, but scripture generally finds its way into the discussion. And it is not a class that you need to attend each time to be able to enjoy and contribute to. You can prepare for each session by reading a four page lesson, but even if you just glance at the materials, our discussions are easy to join.
Some of the areas we have touched on in the past year include: creationism, evolution and intelligent design; dealing with end-of-life issues; reading the Bible in context; divine inspiration for human actions, and comparative religions. We also have the occasional class looking at how movies depict Christian or spirtual themes. The topics are rich sources for thought-provoking discussions that help us sharpen our understanding of our own faith.
