Valentine’s Cupcake Decorating – Friday, February 10

Outreach Council will be hosting a valentine’s cupcake decorating class on Friday, February 10 from 6:30 to 8 PM. Pizza will be served at 6:30 followed by decorating valentine cupcakes led by Sharon Kaminski. This event is designed for participation by parent or parents and child or children. Each parent/child combination will decorate 6 cupcakes. Three will be to take home or give to a favorite valentine. Three will be given to CityTeam Ministries or Chester Eastside Ministries in Chester. The cost of the evening will be $5 per parent child combination. Book Look – Tuesday, March 20

On Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 PM, the next Book Look discussion will cover Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth. Family Pizza and Game Night – January 28

Outreach council is sponsoring a Family Pizza and Game Night on Saturday, January 28 from 5 – 8 PM. Everyone is welcome. Bring a game, bring a friend, bring a relative or come alone. The Rev. J. Barrie Shepherd will be with us in worship on Sunday, January 29^th, and then be available to celebrate the publication of his most recent book, Faces By the Wayside: Persons Who Encountered Jesus on the Road, after church and after the annual meeting. Barrie, the former Parish Associate at our church, has dedicated this book of 30 daily devotionals to the members and staff of the Wallingford Presbyterian Church. Service Commemorating the Life and Legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Chester Eastside Ministries

Renowned author, professor, and social justice activist Ewuare X.Osayande will speak at a service commemorating the life and legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Chester Eastside Ministries on Sunday, January 15, 2012. The service begins at 3 pm. Chester Eastside Ministries is located at 420 East 9th Street in Chester, PA. All are welcome to attend.

Osayande’s presentation, “Resurrection City: King from The Poor People’s Campaign to Occupy Wall Street,” will address the final years of King’s life and his mission to address poverty and economic inequality. “Forty-four years after King’s assassination, the United States continues to grapple with the issue of poverty and racial intolerance,” says Osayande. “The Occupy Wall Street movement is testament to the prophetic relevance of King in our time.”

Ewuare Osayande has been a keynote speaker for Dr. King Day celebrations across the country for more than a decade. Whereas many speakers tend to focus on King’s 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech, Osayande takes on the full measure of King’s legacy. He shows the breadth and depth of King’s ever-growing consciousness and commitment to justice and peace.

A prolific writer, Osayande latest book is a collection of poems entitled Whose America?. Other works by Osayande include Commemorating King: Speeches Honoring the Legacy

of the Civil Rights Movement and Misogyny and the Emcee: Sex, Race and Hip Hop. He is founder and chairperson of The People’s Alliance for Justice Now. In addition to

his work as a writer and activist, Osayande currently is an adjunct professor at Rutgers University in Camden, NJ.

Chester Eastside Ministries is a ministry of the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Bernice Warren is senior pastor. Chester Eastside Ministries has been home to a number of nonprofit and grassroot organizations including Jobs with Peace, Habitat for Humanity and Peace in the Streets. Steadfast Hope II Course Begins January 17th

The Outreach Council is sponsoring a second session of Steadfast Hope, the study of the current situation on the ground in Palestine and Israel, as seen from a Palestinian’s perspective. The course will consist of 6 sessions, meeting every other Tuesday at 7 PM. The first session will be January 17. Three evenings will be movies followed by discussion. The other three evenings will be presentations with discussion. The presenters will be the five original Steadfast Hope leaders plus 1 or 2 additional facilitators. The cost of the course is $10 per person. The course is designed to be independent of the original Steadfast Hope course held last fall, so everyone can participate and learn, whether they attended the previous session or not.

January Book Look – Date Change

The January Book Look will be postponed from January 17 to January 24. The start time remains the same – 7:30 PM. This month’s book will be Jimmy Carter’s Palestine: Peace not Apartheid.

If you want to buy the book, you can order if from Amazon.com. Used paperbooks are available for 1 cent plus $3.99 shipping for a total of $4 per book. There does not appear to be any advantage to combining orders to get free shipping on the used books, so everyone is on their own for this month’s selection.

Emergency Red Cross Blood Drive – Tuesday, January 3 from 2 – 8 PM

The American Red Cross contacted us recently as they are in desperate need of blood. WPC has responded by hosting an emergency donation session from 2 – 8 PM on Tuesday, January 3, just a short time for now. If you can donate and you want to sign up for a time, you can call Tom Erickson at 610-565-8458, or you can call the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS. Even if you don’t sign up, walk-ins are always welcome.

Messiah Sing Recording
