Vivaldi! Queen! Gospel!

The Chester Children’s Chorus will be performing its spring concerts Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7 at 8 pm, in Lang Concert Hall on the campus of Swarthmore College. The full 110-member chorus will sing excerpts from baroque master Antonio Vivaldi’s Magnificat, a medley of hits from the rock group Queen, and a set of all-new gospel pieces written especially for the children by director John Alston. Admission is free and donations will benefit the chorus. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and close when seats are filled. A third performance of the concert will be sponsored by and held at St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, Malvern, on Sunday May 15 at 4 p.m.

The elite chorus includes boys and girls 8 to 17 years old from every school in Chester, who are invited to join on the basis of audition. All members participate in the chorus’ after-school,Saturday, and summer program of rigorous music education supplemented with other arts and academic opportunities. The fruits of the chorus’ training were evident on April 15, when 27 chorus members joined the Swarthmore College Chorus to perform the entire Vivaldi Magnificat.
